NEW DELHI: The shocking rape case of the Maulana Azad Medical College (MAMC) student is still etched in the memory of the cops who investigated the case and nailed the accused.
The incident took place on November 15, 2002. The case was cracked within a week after interrogation of about 1,100 suspects. Thursday''s court order which held Rahul and his associate Amit guilty of the crime, was welcomed by the cops.
Investigation in this case was initiated based on an FIR by a head constable.
The victim had narrated the incident to him and his colleague at the Shaheed Bhagat Singh bus terminal soon after the incident. She had mentioned there itself that the rapist had "Rahul" tattooed on his forearm in English and in capital letters.
Her statement was recorded by the police only after ACP Varsha Sharma convinced the victim and her family about the importance of their support and that their names would be kept confidential. Meanwhile 18 police teams were hot on the trail of the assailant and his three associates.
Even as 1,100 suspects were questioned, records of all persons by the name of Rahul, who lived near the area of the incident, were retrieved. Convict Rahul happened to be a resident of an area near Khooni Darwaza. On November 21, the police team went to meet the victim at her college hostel and showed her eight dossiers. "She identified Rahul at that point itself," said an officer.
According to the victim''s statement, she heard about Rahul''s arrest through a TV news channel. She then went to the IP Estate police station and identified all the four arrested accused. "We filed two chargesheets in this case, one in the sessions court and one in the juvenile court. Two others, who received the mobile phone stolen from the girl and harboured Rahul were also arrested. When the girl identified Rahul we knew we had caught the right man," said additional DCP (PM Security) O P Mishra, who was the ACP of Kamla Market when the incident occurred.
